Who can join Pack 355?

Any child between the age of 5-10.  Scouts are assigned to a den based on their age/grade level.  Cub scouting is a family activity, scouts are accompanied by an adult for all activities and we invite the entire family to participate.

Is Pack 355 only for students in Millbrae public schools?

No, Pack 355 has scouts from Millbrae, San Bruno, and South San Francisco and it is not limited to those in any particular school.

What does Pack 355 do?

Pack 355 strives to develop the whole child and create young people of character that are equipped for the challenges that lie ahead and “bridging” to Boy Scout Troop 355.  Our program combines outdoor activities, community service, and fun, traditional Cub Scout events.

When does Pack 355 meet?

The Pack meets as a group once a month between September and May.  These meetings are usually held at 7 pm on the 2nd Friday of each month.  We also usually have one additional event (e.g., hike, service project, etc.) per month, generally on a weekend afternoon.  Dens may hold additional meetings each month.

What are some Pack activities?

We customize our events each year, but some past/annual events include Urban Night Hike, Cub-On Camping Trip, Raingutter Regatta, Millbrae Tree Lighting, Blue & Gold Potluck (Annual Celebration of Scouting), Pinewood Derby, Earth Day Service Project, Memorial Day National Cemetery Flag Decoration, and annual Fire Circle & Camping Trip.

Do scouts need to attend all activities?

No, we encourage scouts to attend as many activities as possible to get the most from scouting, but also realize that families have many commitments.  We try to schedule meetings/events for Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons as we have found those to be the times with the least conflicts.

What is a Den?

The Pack is made up on Dens, each Den consists of all scouts at a certain age/grade/rank level.  The Dens include, Lions (K), Tigers (1st grade), Wolves (2nd grade), Bears (3rd grade), Webelos I (4th grade), Webelos II (5th grade).  Dens help scouts accomplish the satisfy the intent of the ranks, so they are ready to move to the next rank the following year.

What are the Cub Scouts ranks?

Each year scouts who participate in Pack and Den activities will advance to the next rank.  The ranks start with Lion, and advance through Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos.  The highest award in Cub Scouting is the Arrow of Light which scout earn at the end of their time in Cub Scouts.  It is the only award that scouts take with them when they bridge to Boy Scouts.

What is the Lions program?

New for 2023-24, Pack 355 is starting a Lions program.  This allows kindergarten students to join Pack 355 and take the first steps in Cub Scouts.

How much does it cost to join Pack 355?

The annual dues for the 2023-24 year will be $235.  This includes $80 to the national scouting organization, $80 to the local council, and $75 that stays with the Pack to pay for facilities, events, and the supplies provided by the Pack for each Scout.  (New scouts are also charged a $25 sign up fee by the national scouting organization.) Scholarships may be available based on demonstrated need.

What is included in the cost of annual dues?

Annual dues allow the Pack to pay for facilities and events.  With limited exceptions, for example camping trips, the dues cover the cost of attending all Pack events during the year. The Pack also provides each scout with their neckerchief, neckerchief slide, a Pack 355 T-shirt (Class B uniform), and Cub Scout book (if they would like one). In most years, we are able to provide each scout with a hat as well as we annually recycle hats.

Do adults need to volunteer?

The Pack is 100% volunteer run and the more that everyone helps out the more the scouts (and you) get out of the experience. The Pack needs adults to both serve in formal leadership roles (i.e., Den Leaders), but also to help volunteer to plan and run events throughout the year.  Every family is expected to volunteer to assist with at least one event and many dens decide to divide the meetings between the families.

Does Pack 355 go camping?

Yes, we usually have two car camping trips every year.
